Why ghost mannequin shots make strong source photos

A ghost mannequin photo, also called an invisible mannequin shot, is taken with the garment on a mannequin that is later removed in retouching. What's left looks like clothing worn by nobody: the collar stands, the shoulders have width, a jacket has depth and a skirt keeps its flare. Studios often add a second shot of the inside back neck, so the label and lining show through the opening.

That volume is what makes ghost shots such useful source photos. A flat lay gives the AI an outline; a ghost shot gives it the garment's shape in three dimensions, so there is less to guess. Structured pieces gain the most: jackets and coats, fitted dresses, anything with defined shoulders, a standing collar or a set waist. If all you have are flat lays, those work too. See flat lay to on-model.

What a ghost shot still doesn't tell

A mannequin is not a body, and the photo carries a few of its habits:

  • Pinned fit. Garments on a form are often clipped or pinned at the back so they look neat. The result can look more fitted than the garment really is.
  • One size, one shape. The form has fixed proportions. Your size range and your buyer's body type are not in the photo.
  • Hems with nothing to land on. Many forms are torso-only, so a dress or coat simply hangs below them. Where the hem falls on a person comes from measurements, not from the picture.
  • Stillness. A ghost shot freezes the garment in place. How a skirt swings or a knit stretches isn't in it.

We close these gaps with your size chart, the size on the mannequin, a note on whether it was pinned, and the fabric type.

What to send

What to sendWhat it's for
Ghost mannequin photos: front and back, plus a side view or inside-neck shot if you have them; ideally 2,000 px or largerShape, volume, color and construction come from these. Retouched studio finals are fine.
The size on the mannequin, and whether the garment was pinned or clippedSo the model's fit follows the garment, not the styling on the form.
Your size chartWhere the hem, sleeves and waist sit on the model.
Fabric type and weightHow the piece behaves in the movement and lifestyle frames.
1–3 reference imagesThe mood and setting you want.

Nothing gets shipped. If a studio shot your ghost photos, check that your license allows editing them, because some studios keep the copyright.

What you get

Each product comes back as seven images on one model. Pilots use a model from our roster; on a retainer, we cast your own brand model around your buyer's gender, age, body type and mood and use her for every product after:

  • a cover that leads the gallery;
  • full length and back views for fit and length;
  • a lifestyle frame in a setting that suits the brand;
  • a movement frame where the garment swings and folds;
  • two detail frames of construction, fabric or print.

Studio images on a model start from $95 each, with no minimum order; lifestyle images and campaigns are quoted in your proposal. A pilot of 5 products × 7 images is credited in full to your first retainer month. The first batch is ready within 10 business days, with two free revision rounds and, once you've paid in full, an exclusive, perpetual license. Keep your ghost shots, and give them a new job

On-model photos and ghost shots answer different questions. One shows the garment on a body; the other shows its shape and construction with nothing in the way. When you add on-model images, keep the ghost shots and move them further down the gallery.

Marketplaces point the same way. Amazon's image guidelines for clothing say main images for adult clothing "must be photographed on a model", and its clothing style guide (dated March 2022) recommends adding an off-figure alternate image for products shown on a model.

In practice:

  • Main image: the on-model cover. On Amazon, a ghost shot can't be the main image for adult clothing.
  • Product page gallery: the on-model frames first, then your ghost front and back for shape and construction.
  • Amazon alternates: six frames from the set, plus one ghost shot as the off-figure alternate the style guide suggests.

Ghost mannequin photography service, or ghost to on-model?

If you searched for a ghost mannequin photography service, you may need a studio rather than us. Sellora works remotely, never handles products and doesn't shoot ghost mannequin photos. If you have no product photos yet, sharp phone photos on a hanger work too, as long as the fabric, color and details are clearly visible.

What ghost shoots cost is covered in ghost mannequin and flat lay photography cost, and how they are made in ghost mannequin photography.

What we check on ghost-based sets

Every frame gets the same human check as any set: fit and length, drape, color, print and logo, construction, hands, pose and skin, and main-image rules. With ghost shots as the source, three points get extra attention:

  • Silhouette. Shoulder width, collar height, lapel shape and skirt flare should match the ghost shot, not drift toward a generic version of the garment.
  • Pinned fit, undone. If the garment was clipped on the form, the model's fit follows your size chart instead of the clips.
  • Color. Studio ghost shots are usually evenly lit, which makes them a reliable color reference. The color in every frame is matched to your product.

Where it works best, and where we say so up front

AI on-model work is strongest for dresses and womenswear, outerwear, activewear, streetwear and basics, and kids' clothing. If you sell several colorways, you only need one of them photographed: we produce the others on the same model, in the same pose and light.

Three things are still hard for AI: shiny fine jewelry, outfits built from several layers that interact closely, and fine lace seen from very close. If a piece falls in that zone, you hear it from us before we quote, not after.

FAQ

Can AI turn ghost mannequin photos into on-model images?
Yes. A ghost shot gives the AI the garment's shape and volume, and your size chart and fabric details fill in what the mannequin can't show, such as the real fit and where the hem lands. A person checks every frame before delivery.
Are ghost mannequin shots or flat lays better for AI on-model photos?
Ghost shots carry more of the garment's 3D shape, so structured pieces such as jackets and fitted dresses need less guesswork. Flat lays work too, so send whichever you have.
Do you offer ghost mannequin photography?
No, we don't shoot products ourselves. We turn the ghost shots you already have into on-model images; if you don't have product photos yet, sharp phone photos on a hanger work, as long as the fabric, color and details are clearly visible.
Should I keep my ghost mannequin photos after adding on-model images?
Yes, as secondary images further down the gallery. On Amazon, main images for adult clothing must be on a model, and Amazon's clothing style guide recommends an off-figure alternate image, which a ghost shot can be.
How much does ghost mannequin to on-model cost?
Studio images on a model start from $95 each, with no minimum order. Every project is quoted individually: lifestyle images, campaigns and monthly retainers are priced in your proposal, which shows the total. Before the full batch, you approve the direction on 2–4 images.
